Isa Rosenberger is an artist based in Vienna.
Her practice includes video, installation, photograpy and collaborative projects.

The central aspect of Isa Rosenberger's artistic approach is the contextualization of historical events in our present, the retelling of history and the questioning of common narratives. She often focuses on alternative readings of history and on forgotten histories, e.g. of female cultural pioneers such as Stella Kadmon, Austrian-Jewish dramaturg and Austria's first female theatre director (Courage, 2015), or the Austrian-Jewish-American writer and screenwriter Gina Kraus (Cafe Vienne. ... full of spirits so free, 2014/18). Another focus of Rosenberger's research-based practice is on political upheavals and their socio-political and economic consequences, especially in the urban and public spaces of post-socialist Europe. In several works (Monument for the Women´s Centre, 2005-06, The Warsaw Nike, 2007, or Nový Most, 2008) she dedicates herself to ideologically charged monuments and architectures. But also far-reaching geopolitical developments, such as the 2008 financial crisis and the expansion claims of European banks in Eastern Europe, are taken into account (Espiral, 2010/13).

Rosenberger's central artistic method follows the principle of montage – media images, narratives and different temporalities are juxtaposed. The documentary form undergoes a multi-perspective condensation through the combination of archive material, staging, (re)performance or dialogical format in the sense of oral history. Different temporalities and contexts are brought into comprehensible relations and supposedly divergent events are thought together. Within the framework of participative settings, Rosenberger involves various actors – often contemporary witnesses – who use interviews or retelling to make (historical) events experienceable from a personal point of view and activate them in our present.

She is well aware that memories always have fictional parts and are increasingly mediated and directed by the media. Rosenberger constructs spaces of memory that are at the same time spaces of experience. Her works can be read entirely in the sense of Jacques Rancière's definition of critical art by creating fictions that "create a new relationship between appearance and reality, between the visible and its meaning, the individual and the common. "
